Biosketch

Dr. Nikola Angelov is Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, where he holds the Raul G. Caffesse, D.D.S., M.S., Dr. Odont. Distinguished Professorship in Periodontics.

Dr. Angelov earned his D.D.S., M.S., Certificate of Specialty, and Ph.D. in Oral Pathology and Periodontology from the University "St. Cyril and Methodius" Faculty of Dentistry in Skopje, Macedonia, where he subsequently served on the faculty from 1993 to 2001. In 2001, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship in the Oral Infection and Immunity Branch of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH/NIDCR) in Bethesda, Maryland, where he developed a novel model of oral mucosal wound healing and contributed to collaborative clinical studies and clinical trial evaluations.

In 2004, Dr. Angelov joined the faculty of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontics, progressing through the ranks to full Professor, serving as Section Chief, and directing the Pre-doctoral Program in Periodontics. He holds a Certificate of Specialty in Advanced Periodontics from LLUSD and has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology since 2008. He joined UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry in 2013 as Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene.

His research focuses on oral infection and immunity, mucosal wound healing, periodontal microbiology, and dental implants. He has secured extramural funding from the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Foundation, the Osteology Foundation, and other organizations, and has served as a site principal investigator on multicenter clinical trials. Dr. Angelov has authored more than 70 publications, the majority in peer-reviewed journals with high impact factors, and is a sought-after speaker at national and international professional and scientific meetings.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and an invited member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honors Dental Society. Dr. Angelov is active in the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, and the Southwest Society of Periodontists, among other professional organizations. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry and Oral Health and Dental Management, and reviews manuscripts for the Journal of Periodontology, the Journal of the American Dental Association, and several other publications.

Dr. Angelov's academic honors include the American Academy of Periodontology's Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics, a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from the U.S. Congress for outstanding service to the community, the Bell Leadership Institute Achievers Program Scholarship from the American Dental Education Association, and recognition from institutions in the United States, Europe, and more.
