pediatric dentistry

Because UTHealth School of Dentistry at Houston is a teaching institution, our expert faculty dentists oversee residents and dental students as they care for patients. A “resident” is a dentist who has chosen to undergo an additional two years of training to specialize in pediatric dentistry.

Residents treat patients in our Postgraduate Clinic in the Houston Medical Center Plaza, while students see patients in the predoctoral “Student” Clinic at the School of Dentistry. Experienced faculty dentists oversee both students and residents.

UTHealth Pediatric Dentistry

Our showcase clinic in Houston Medical Center Plaza is where faculty dentists and residents care for patients ranging in age from birth to 18 years. At this location, we accept private insurance, Medicaid, CHIP, cash and major credit cards. Two levels of expertise are available:

Faculty Group Practice

In addition to supervising residents, our faculty specialists accept patients for direct care, providing a high level of pediatric dentistry expertise building on scientific principles for evidence-based practice.  The majority of our faculty providers are certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and average more than 30 years’ experience in caring for infants, children and teens, including those with special needs and complex medical conditions. Faculty Group Practice fees are close to what a private dentist would charge.

We perform diagnostic, restorative, minor orthodontic, surgical and preventive dental health procedures, and at our Houston Medical Center location, we can provide conscious sedation and IV sedation in conjunction with a dental or medical anesthesiologist as appropriate. We also provide dental treatment with general anesthesia at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center (TMC). UTHealth Pediatric Dentistry faculty see patients at other TMC institutions, including Shriner’s Hospitals for Children – Houston, where we treat cleft lip and/or palate and serve as consultants for burn care.

Student Clinic (Predoctoral)

Dental students learn pediatric dentistry in the predoctoral “Student Clinic.” This clinic does not accept insurance, but fees are about two-thirds lower than a private dentist would charge. Students work more slowly than experienced dentists, so visits will take longer, and this clinic is closed during semester breaks and holidays. Complex cases will be referred to UTHealth Pediatric Dentistry.
